Crazy Weekend with an Unexpected Race Finish

What a crazy weekend: races, festivals and fireworks. We started Saturday with races for all. Matt headed for a triathlon and I had a local 3.7 mile (really 3.9 mile) race. I knew I wasn’t in prime racing form but met up with some girls from Moms Run This Town group and was hoping for a decent run with no pain.

Friday night into Saturday morning was filled with downpours leading to a large triathlon being cancelled thanks to bike course flooding (luckily Matt had done a different race) and my race starting and ending in a wet, muddy field. In my rush from the house with a 3 year old I forgot my Garmin and got to run “naked” which I was okay with but now wish I had my splits.

We were off and immediately dodging puddles and running hills, I forgot how hilly this lake was. I smartly let the kids in the high school cross country jerseys go without putting on a chase. The first mile felt decent, mile two a little tougher so I decided to do a little interval running: speed up on flats, slow on hills, etc. Then pow! Mile 2 here comes the leg pain, right on cue. This seems to be the limit for me right now; 2 miles of push and then I need to slow. I guess it is a start though. I also knew the worst hills were coming so I just starting running easy. I hit Mile 3 and slowed a finally hit more flat and was speeding a little more until the final two big hills before the finish. As I crossed and was handed my slip 39th finisher, no chip times here. I headed to the table and discovered I was the 3rd woman and 2nd in my age group! I I honestly have no idea on my time, I forgot to look right away and walked back after grabbing water 28:25 but have 4 different times listed on the results lists?? (lists are women, age group, all, winners) so who really knows, I am guessing close to 28:00.

We quickly headed off to O’s race where she ran 0.8 miles around another local lake. She was all smiles as she ran and crossed the finish line in 10ish minutes! Wow J

The day only continued from here: afternoon at the festival with games, coin hunt and a lot of fun for her. Then dinner out for Matt’s birthday and finally her first fireworks to end the day.
