I Survived!

After 6 weeks at home I survived my first week back to the work world which explains my lack of writing and reading other blogs, hoping to catch up over the weekend. I am happy to be back to working, I was not cut out for the SAHM thing but stressed with the reality of it all, I know once I settle in things will be easier since my schedule will be flexible and allow working from home. And now I get to enjoy my Friday at home :-)

I survived getting back in the pool, my first swim in a month and it almost didn't suck! (That is great for me). I even figured something out and improved my stroke, I am starting to feel like I could get to the point of tolerating this swimming thing. I can run for hours but can barely swim one lap without getting tired and out of breath, but I think I fixed the issue...I kick too much, use too much power and energy and still don't go faster so I relaxed and bam! I felt so much better. Any other advice?

Now if I had one of these and the associated scenery and weather I might like swimming even more!

I survived sick toddler; we got hit with the nasty stomach bug going around meaning fevers of 104, not eating resulting in 1 pound weight loss (not a good thing when you are only 5th percentile for weight) and moodiness for her (and me!). Now a week later she is left with a nasty cough that I am trying to decide if it is somehow related or a new thing. Who knows, allergies maybe?? Whatever it is she isn't bothered much...Monkey girl is back! No wonder I get nasty looks from other moms at the park as my 2 year old hangs upside down 6 ft off the ground by herself!

I survived with a week of good eating, maybe a little extra snacking but with planning things went pretty good and I kept myself busy enough that I wasn't eating out of boredom or just sitting. It really helped to have meals done and ready to go and packing plenty of healthy veggies thanks to our CSA. Check out Fitness Friday today for Jill's post on food additives.

Looking forward to a day at home even though it is packed with both work and home projects, but I will sneak in a workout or 2 in the middle of it all. Ready for a 20 mile run this weekend and even considering another swim! What is happening to me?! Happy Friday, have a fun weekend!

  1. Swimming yay! I've always thought it important to mix up the strokes, giving different muscles groups a workout and allowing you to breath more easily at times than freestyle may in the beginning, often in my warm up every 4th lap is back or breastroke for that....otherwise one girl said to remember that underwater its almost like your shoulder through elbow then down to forearm are perpendicular to each other as you pull through, like pulling past a beer barrel...oh, and one last thing, if you need to, breathe more til you get comfortable, esp in the warmup...enjoy your 20mile run!

    1. Thanks for the advice. I often use backstroke and breast stroke when I am tired, but should make a point to rotate them more.

  2. I don't have much swim advice, as I'm still learning myself, but it definitely makes a huge difference when you pay attention to your form and become more efficient. Glad your first week of work went well!

    1. Form is huge with swimming, it's just hard to correct and work on breathing at the same time!

  4. A whole lot of surviving going on!

Stick with the swimming. I never got the love of it, but my husband, with a running background, now loves the swim the most of his tri training. He did do a couple sessions with a coach to help get the stroke right. It's totally worth it.

    1. I worked with a coach in the past (5ish years ago) and had to pull that knowledge back but it would be a great idea to get a refresher with a coach. I hope starting with a goal of once a week will help me stick with it.

  6. glad you have survived it all and are slowing getting back to a "normal" routine. I'm working to add in swims after my runs, but starting with really short distances
