Commitment Day 5K

I love the concept of kicking off the new year with a race and was thrilled with the opportunity to coach a group of runners with this goal in mind, but this lacks some appeal when you add in the fact that we live in the frozen tundra and race morning brought us sub zero temperatures and windchills. Combine this with my lingering (and quite awful) cough that scares many and I chose the inside option pushing O in the BOB. This meant 8 laps around the stadium along with the other parent child teams.

It was warm, the music was playing and we had fun, best part my lungs were not frozen! Honestly the 8 laps went pretty quick. After I finished my run O got out of the stroller and we ran a victory lap together just in time for daddy and grandpa to come upstairs from their run and give high 5s as she neared the finish line. I am also using this race as my 5 by the 5th Race for Laura's series

It was a fun way to start 2013 although could have been a little warmer. I am getting a little tired of the constant below zero temps/windchills requiring running on the treadmill. Enough!

Who else ran to kick off 2013? What is your commitment to a healthy year?

Me, I am committing to being happier and focusing on others. I want to take a minute and say thank you for the comments on yesterday's goal post. You have helped me see the importance in life isn't always each little thing, but the big picture and despite not achieving each little goal I set (and why did 12/31 have to be the deadline?) I have done a great deal in 2012 and it will only help me get where I want to be.

  1. I am not a big fan of cold weather- that's amazing that you had an indoor option! Definitely where I would have been, too. I have to go back and catch yesterday's post... happy new year!

  2. Way to start the year off right. I did a short run outside yesterday and froze my butt off. Couldn't feel my fingers most of the time. I'm ready for spring!

  3. I don't mind our cold weather which dips down to the low 30s, but I don't know how your lungs can handle lower than that! Way to keep on getting out there though!

    1. I would love 30s now, I think I might wear shorts if it ever gets that warm again :)

  4. Great job! I did a 5K yesterday as well, luckily it was about 40 degrees yesterday which is abnormally warm for New England in January!

  5. I'd love it if it warmed up here, too (although our temps may be warm to you). Unfortunately, winter just started in STL. Blech!

I love that you got i a victory lap with the little one. I wish I had been more of a fitness role model with my kids and involved them with my workouts, etc. Props!

I will run my first 5 for 5 on Saturday.

  7. It's been very cold here too (not as cold as where you are, though), but I honestly prefer it to the hot hot weather we get in the summer. It's worth some cold mornings in tights to me. Congrats on the 8 fun laps! A good way to ring in the New Year!

    1. I don't mind some cold but this is awful! Last winter was perfect 20s-30s and lack of snow :)

  8. I did a virtual half marathon on New Years Day, and the temp was 35. I can't even imagine sub 0 temps!! I would've done it indoors too.
